We face a genuine epidemic of child abuse, neglect and endangerment. Last year alone, Citrus, Hernando, Lake, Marion and Sumter Counties saw nearly 6,000 maltreated children.
Sadly, these documented cases represent only a small fraction of the multitude of abuses that go unreported in our communities. And with today’s economic struggles, joblessness and local population growth, the number of cases will only continue to climb unless we all do our part.
